➽ The exhibition | Artist’s statement
Temporal Layers explores the experience of moving through different places across different times, constructing imagery that shifts between the representational and the abstract. The work brings together ‘knowns’ and ‘unknowns’ from personal experience through a process of layering varying types of imagery.
In earlier projects, I was drawn to researching the murky, messy corners of local women’s histories in Victoria, where gaps, silences and partial stories revealed just as much as the recorded facts. That interest in presence and absence continues in this new body of work, where abstraction and representation sit alongside each other as ways of approaching what cannot be fully understood or articulated.

Although this project is rooted in a Western art-making tradition, it is sparked by the smells, sights and sounds of Penang as much as by the environment of my home in Australia. My early childhood memories and teenage years in Penang – full of curiosity and wonder – merge with the layers of understanding and complexity that come from adult life in Australia. These threads meet within the work.

I am fortunate to have lived across several eastern states of Australia, in Penang and briefly in the United States. I have had the opportunity to travel in Europe as a young adult, and more recently through other parts of Asia. I recognise the privilege of having experienced so many places beyond my birth country.

Back in Australia a growing awareness of the histories and ongoing presence of First Australians provides a vital perspective on colonial histories and my place within them. Wherever I am – in Australia or elsewhere – I find myself asking: How do I act with respect and awareness? How do I avoid reinforcing colonial habits of ignorance or entitlement? How might I celebrate difference while also recognising shared humanity?

Wonder and curiosity become my guides here. The artist’s role is to prompt questions rather than provide neat resolutions. Through meticulous drawing and close observation, I have learned that the abstract lives within the representational – that careful looking does not resolve uncertainty but often deepens it. Temporal Layers holds both the known and unknown, inviting viewers into that same space of questioning and discovery.

➽ The Artist | Catherine Pilgrim
In 2024 Catherine Pilgrim returned to Penang for the first time in many years. Even after decades away, the island felt familiar – its light, smells, textures and rhythms reconnecting her with formative childhood and teenage years spent there. Although Catherine is now based on Jaara Country (Castlemaine, Australia), Penang remains the landscape of her earliest memories and continues to shape her curiosity and creative approach.
Drawing is central to Catherine’s practice. Her work is known for its meticulous attention to detail and quiet, reflective tone. She works across stone lithography, digital printmaking, drawing, and textiles – exploring themes of absence, identity, contemporary still life and the complexity of layered histories.

Catherine has exhibited in Australia and internationally since 1994, following her studies in lithography and drawing in Washington, DC. In 2011 she completed a Master of Fine Art (Research) at Monash University, Melbourne, examining the subjective process involved in creating representational images. Her work has received several honours, including the Australian Print Workshop Collie Trust Award for Emerging Printmakers, and she has been shortlisted in numerous prize exhibitions. Catherine’s artworks are held in major public, corporate and private collections, including the National Gallery of Australia, Geelong Regional Art Gallery, Castlemaine Art Museum, National Australia Bank and the Australian War Memorial.

Temporal Layers marks the beginning of a new major body of work through which Catherine returns to Penang not only as an artist but as someone reconnecting with a place that shaped her. This project explores wonder, place and identity through the lens of her cross-cultural upbringing between Malaysia and Australia – an experience that continues to resonate deeply in her practice.

The artworks from the exhibition will be on sale.
